The FDA’s Office of Generic Drugs recently warned the drug companies that they may be violating the Federal Drug Act, which prohibits the sale of certain drugs under the brand names of generic drug manufacturers.
The letter to the FDA says the FDA had not reviewed the information from companies that may be using the brand name, but said it has no reason to believe the companies may be taking the information.
According to the letter, the FDA had found that “the brand name for sildenafil (Viagra) is the active ingredient in the generic drug vardenafil,” which is the generic drug used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men.
The FDA says it has not found any information from the company that may be mislabeling the brand name.
“We do not have information on sildenafil or vardenafil that is in the generic drug,” the letter said. “These generic drug products have not been marketed. The manufacturer has never told the FDA about this.”
Sildenafil is the generic name for Viagra.
“This is a matter of the FDA having received information from the manufacturers of sildenafil,” the letter said.
“Our analysis of the FDA’s report did not find any information on sildenafil or vardenafil that is in the generic drug category,” the letter said.
“The manufacturer’s data does not support the conclusion that sildenafil is a drug product. The manufacturer does not know about the data because it has not been reviewed by the FDA.”
The letter said, “These drugs may cause side effects in some people, but they do not appear to be associated with the use of sildenafil.”
“We are having difficulty contacting FDA’s office and seeking your input on this matter,” the letter said.
